Troubleshooting a Cooling System
After EDAS® Alerts...

OK, the time has finally come where EDAS® has alerted and you suspect that there is a problem with the cooling system of your Powerstroke. Before you begin diagnostics you need to be aware that there are three situations that will cause EDAS® to falsely alert. They are:

  • Coolant bottle is overfilled.
  • Driving the truck under load before it is warmed up and the thermostat has opened.
  • Running a tuner with a "Hot Tune". Tuners running anything other than a mild tow or economy tune is not recommend... PERIOD!

If you have any of the above conditions present correct them and test drive your truck to see if the EDAS® Unit alerts again. If not... Problem solved!

The videos on this page outline the proper procedures which should be followed to properly troubleshoot the cooling system of a 6.0L or 6.4L Powerstroke. The videos are shot from the perspective of a professional mechanic with access to Ford Powerstroke compatible diagnostic equipment. Working on a Powerstroke requires professional mechanic skills and equipment!

If you are a mechanic troubleshooting the cooling system and you have identified the failed component(s) and need technical assistance you should check out our Master Mechanic Video Repair Series. Our Master Mechanic Series has the step-by-step procedures you need to work on these trucks. Click here for Master Mechanic Series information.

If you are an owner and you are taking your vehicle to a dealer or repair shop for cooling system diagnostics we highly recommend that you have the mechanic watch these videos before working on your truck. If they refuse to watch the videos, find another mechanic ASAP that will!
