How does EDAS® work?
The EDAS® Alert System is a very accurate precision instrument and uses a Patent Pending method of calculating and alerting to an overpressure condition of the cooling system. Any severe coolant pressure changes, spikes in pressure, or long term over pressurization events will trigger the EDAS® alarm.
What makes the EDAS® Alert System so unique?
No vehicle manufacturer monitors engine coolant pressure. The powertrain control module (PCM) in the Ford Powerstroke diesel truck monitors hundreds of parameters in both the engine and the transmission but not engine coolant pressure. Click here to see the unique features of the EDAS® Contol Unit.
Will EDAS® prevent cooling system failures on my truck?
NO! Unfortunately, the 6.0l and 6.4L Powerstroke’s are notorious for cooling system failures. What EDAS® will do is alert the driver at the onset of a cooling system failure allowing them to stop the truck long before other expensive components are compromised.
EDAS® can’t prevent cooling system failures, but it will act as your early warning alert when a problem arises. The whole concept behind installing EDAS® on your Powerstroke is to prevent a simple $500 - $1,000 repair from turning into a $5,000 to $14,000 repair nightmare! Remember EDAS® stands for “ENGINE DAMAGE AVOIDANCE SYSTEM!
If I have EDAS® installed do I still need to do an EGR delete or head studs?
EDAS® is your “early warning device” of a cooling system failure. If and when a cooling component fails you will be alerted immediately and long before other critical systems are affected. Once you identify the failed component, then you can decide what upgrades you want to make to the cooling system or just repair it and leave it stock.
For example; if your EGR cooler were to fail you may want to do an EGR Delete rather than replace the EGR Valve and EGR Cooler. BUT, why spend thousands of dollars more to replace head gaskets? EDAS® is designed to protect your motor and your wallet from unnecessary repairs!
I don’t tow anything with my truck. Do I still need EDAS®?
ABSOLUTELY YES! More than half of the cooling system failures that we have seen are in non tow vehicles. Cooling system component failure is random. Imagine a fan clutch failure in heavy traffic on a hot day. Your air conditioning is on high and the cooling system becomes overtaxed and cannot cool the engine.
REMEMBER, when one cooling component fails, other components associated with the cooling system are affected causing them to fail as well. All this damage happens within minutes and the driver is absolutely unaware there is serious problem with the engine. EDAS® is cheap insurance!
What do I do when EDAS® alerts while driving?
Stop the vehicle immediately and follow the directions included in our “ EDAS® Roadside Checklist”, which is included in the EDAS® kit or watch this video.
My truck is still under warranty. Should I install EDAS®?
Installing EDAS® can be of substantial benefit to any Powerstroke under warranty. REMEMBER, when one cooling component fails, other components associated with the cooling system are affected causing them to fail as well. All this damage happens within minutes and the driver is absolutely unaware there is serious problem with the engine.
Warranty repair is a tricky thing. When you have a cooling system failure the dealer will only replace those components that are in a state of failure at the time. Other components that have become compromised as a result of the cooling system failure but are not yet failing will not be repaired! It is VERY COMMON for a Powerstroke that had an EGR cooler failure, which was repaired to have the head gaskets blow within a short time.
By installing EDAS® on your truck BEFORE YOU HAVE EVER HAD A WARRANTY FAILURE you will alerted to a cooling system failure long before other expensive and critical components are affected. When the time comes that you experience your first EGR cooler failure you will not compromise other critical components like head gaskets, radiators, oil coolers, etc.
EGR cooler replacement is a 1-day repair and head gaskets can take a week or more to complete. EDAS® provides new Powerstroke truck owners with confidence that their trucks are not ticking time bombs with another time consuming failure just around the corner. EDAS® is cheap insurance especially if you plan to keep your vehicle after your Ford Factory warranty expires!
Will EDAS® void my Ford factory warranty?
The installation of EDAS® WILL NOT void your Ford Factory Warranty. EDAS® simply taps into your cooling system as a passive device to monitor the cooling system pressure.
If I install a pressure gauge to monitor my cooling system do I really need EDAS®?
First of all there is no pod or dash style pressure gauge offered for the automotive aftermarket that can stand up to an ethylene glycol (antifreeze) environment? Second, the gauge would not make you aware of an event until after it has happened.
EDAS® is not just a simple pressure gauge hooked up to a speaker. Modern diesel cooling systems are dynamic and meant to “vent”, so there are times when it is OK for the cooling system to temporarily exceed the pressure of the coolant bottle cap! Also, it requires a VERY ACCURATE pressure switch, which can live in an ethylene glycol environment. We could not find a single affordable switch in the aftermarket that could live in an ethylene glycol environment possessing the accuracy necessary to monitor cooling system pressure.
EDAS® combines three unique technologies to make up the overall system. First is our pressure switch, which we had manufactured just for us. It uses a revolutionary EPDM membrane, which is impervious to ethylene glycol (antifreeze) and has an accuracy of .05 PSI! Second, we have designed a micro processor controller that monitors the cooling system pressure pulse width duration and frequency, which allows the system to “breathe” as designed by the OEM manufacturer but alert when conditions exceed normal operating parameters. Third, instead of a non-descript siren or buzzer we have incorporated a “Voice Alert” into our system that warns the driver using spoken commands that lets the driver know exactly what is wrong with the vehicle!
Unfortunately, there is no DIY solution at any reasonable price we could find that possesses the accuracy and reliability of our EDAS® Alert System!
I watch my gauges constantly so why do I need EDAS®?
The factory engine temp gauges move slowly in relation to the actual Engine coolant temps. There can be an overheating event deep in the motor that will not get to the temp sensor for some time and all the while damage is being done to the engine. BUT the over pressurization event happens almost immediately and EDAS® will alert you to it.
Why do you require a cooling system pressure test when installing EDAS®?
It is imperative that the cooling system of the truck is working correctly. If there is a leak in a hose, fitting or the coolant bottle (very common) it must be corrected before the EDAS® Alert System will work correctly. Also, pressure checking the cooling system is required to verify the proper operation of the new EDAS® installation.
Most repair shops can do a pressure test on your cooling system or you can do the pressure check yourself for FREE by using the “free tool loan” programs offered by many national parts houses. See this video about doing your own FREE cooling system pressure check.
Why do you recommend a complete coolant flush when installing EDAS®?
Any diesel truck that has over 50,000 miles should have the coolant flushed just on basic principles. Contaminated coolant and resulting deposits in the engine can cause “hot spots” by impeding coolant flow in critical components such as EGR coolers, oil coolers and radiators. The concept of EDAS® is Engine Damage Avoidance System and having a clean cooling system free of contaminants that is working at 100% is priority one! See our FREE video about doing your own cooling system flush.
What do I tell my mechanic or dealer when EDAS® continues to alert?
Tell them that you have the EDAS® Alert System installed on your truck and it monitors cooling system pressure. When EDAS® alerts it means there is an overpressure situation in the cooling system. Tell the mechanic or dealer about the conditions that make the EDAS® unit alert. For example; if you find EDAS® alerting every time you climb a hill while towing or only in stop-and-go traffic. This will give them the information necessary to duplicate the problem.
Next, have them visit our FREE “Troubleshooting a Cooling System After EDAS® Alerts” section of our website. This section will familiarize them with how EDAS® works and how to troubleshoot the cooling system on the 6.0L or 6.4L Powerstroke.
My Powerstroke already has an EGR delete. Do I need EDAS®?
By performing an EGR delete you have helped your motor run 30+ degrees cooler and eliminated one of the primary causes of cooling system failures. That was a good investment and worth every penny… BUT, unfortunately there are still many other cooling system components like fan clutch, thermostat, oil cooler, head gasket failures, etc., that can still lead to expensive repairs.
REMEMBER, when one cooling component fails, other components associated with the cooling system are affected causing them to fail as well. This cascade of additional damage happens within minutes of the initial failure and the driver is absolutely unaware there is serious problem with the engine. EDAS® is cheap insurance!
I’ve had my Powerstroke “Bulletproofed”! Do I really need EDAS®?
Bulletproofing (I.e.; Head gaskets, studs, EGR and EGR cooler delete.) your Powerstroke is the ultimate in longevity modifications anyone can make to a 6.0L or 6.4L Powerstroke. The cost of “bulletproofing” your Powerstroke was VERY EXPENSIVE and worth every penny for the improvement that was made to the overall operational integrity and longevity of the engine… BUT, unfortunately there are still many other cooling system components like fan clutch, thermostat, oil cooler, etc., that can still lead to expensive repairs.
REMEMBER, when one cooling component fails, other components associated with the cooling system are affected causing them to fail as well. This cascade of additional damage happens within minutes of the initial failure and the driver is absolutely unaware there is serious problem with the engine. You have already spent a fortune Bulletproofing your engine so don’t let another inexpensive cooling system failure trash your motor. EDAS® is cheap insurance!
How come the coolant cap that comes with your kit is not a Ford OEM cap?
We tested the reliability and longevity of all the major manufacturers of coolant caps and the Motorad Coolant Cap, which is included in our kit, performed time and again with the most consistent performance and longevity.
I have a tuner on my truck and EDAS® keeps alerting. Why?
Tuners pour more fuel to the injectors than the stock tune. More fuel makes more fire. More fire makes more heat and more heat makes more pressure, which is beyond the design parameters of the cooling system. If you continually run your truck hard it will damage the engine and EDAS® is alerting you to this situation. You might want to run a milder tune if the longevity of your engine is important to you. EDAS® works fine with mild tow or economy tunes.
My EDAS® keeps alerting and my mechanic or dealer says nothing is wrong with the engine. What should I do?
There are only three situations that cause the EDAS® System to falsely alert. First, is if the coolant bottle is overfilled. Second, is if the truck is driven under hard load before it has time to warm up. Or, third, if your truck has a tuner running anything other than an economy or tow tune. Click here for more info on false alarms.
If none of the above conditions apply to your situation your truck definitely has a cooling system failure of some kind… NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! It’s time for you to find another mechanic and get a second opinion diagnosis. Make sure to tell your mechanic about the FREE troubleshooting and diagnostic information available on the PowerstrokeHelp.com website. FREE Troubleshooting information is located here.
When EDAS® alerts can I diagnose the failure myself or do I need to take it to a mechanic or dealer?
Most mechanically familiar people can use our “Troubleshooting a Cooling System After EDAS® Alerts” section of our website to determine why EDAS® is alerting. Once you have determined the offending component you will find step-by-step repair information in our Master Mechanic Video Repair Series.
Do you make EDAS® for a 7.3 Powerstroke?
YES! Although the 7.3L Powerstroke is a very stable engine platform when compared to the design flaws of the 6.0L and 6.4L PSD, it is still vulnerable to catastrophic engine meltdown caused by a cooling system failure. Why let something as small as a cooling fan clutch or thermostat failure cause thousands of dollars in additional damage just because the driver wasn’t alerted at the onset of the initial failure? The fact is that all modern diesels should be protected by the EDAS® Alert system!
Is EDAS® just for Powerstroke’s or can it be used for other applications?
EDAS® will work on any vehicle that has a closed cooling system. We have successfully installed EDAS® on several marine diesel applications where debris can clog the sea water intake and cause engine damage. We have installed EDAS® on various types of excavating equipment including loaders, dozers, bobcats, back hoes etc. We have installed EDAS® on several class 8 road tractors, class 7 delivery trucks all the way down to Duramax powered Chevrolet and Ram powered Dodge trucks.
